From the President
Summer is here, I think, lots of yard work and other chores to interfere with fishing. Hope you are leaving some time to wet a line.
Your club has a lot going on. See the outings and events elsewhere in this newsletter. Mark your calendar.
You won't want to miss this months meeting. July 14th. Members sale night. This is a good chance to stock up on lots of stuff. Bring your sale items, and money to buy new stuff. Bring some killer flies to donate to the club sale, and a fly for the raffle. I understand there may be a nice door prize that someone will take home.
A Day With Skip Morris
Mark your calendar, one of our more exciting events this year will be on October 23.when we will present A Day With Skip Morris. The event will be held at the Coupeville High School.
Skip Morris is a nationally known instructor and speaker about all phases of fly fishing. He was the principal speaker at the recent FFF convention. He is the author of many books innumerable articles and several instructional videos on fly fishing.
This event will be free to club members. There will be a entry fee for non-members (amount TBD) and lunch will be included.
US Navy outreach
Thanks to all who have volunteered to help with the July 15 training session at the Navy Marina. A big thanks to Rich Dodd for this great idea. This is going to be a lot of fun for everyone.
Keep in touch. The club is here for you.
Tom Campbell
From the Vice President
The program this month is our member’s sale day. Now is the time to get rid of all that old gear you no longer need or use. Bring it in and someone will have a use for it. And we can all have a good time haggling over prices. We’ll still have the usual fly tying demo and will also have fishing videos playing for your entertainment.
Also the instructors signed up for the Navy Outreach program will get their casting certification / instruction from Gil. Get there early (5:30) and maybe pick up a few pointers.
Jeff Dodd
From the Treasurer
As of the end of June, we have $4,739 in the bank, of which $1,152 is in a CD that matures in July of 2010. At the same time last year, we had $3,867 in the bank.
Twenty-four names have been removed from our roster for non-payment of 2010 dues, but the good news is that we have 13 new members in the club this year.
Income from meeting raffles is running behind last year, $234 compared to $379.
Let’s all support our club by buying more raffle tickets!

Meetings:
Second Wednesday of the month at Race Road unless otherwise notified. Fly Tying begins at 6:00, and the social hour starts at 6:30.
Outing report:
The Idaho trip to the upper Coeur d'Alene River took place June 22 through June 25. Pat Broderick and I left on the 7 AM ferry and headed for the Stevens Pass highway for Spokane and points West. Todd Peterson and his guests from Mill Creek, (Dan Eppick and his fourteen year old son Jimmy), left Seattle about two hours later. We met up with Ron Mazurek at the Big Hank campground 45 miles up the river about 3:30 PM, and the other party joined us later that evening. After setting up camp, preparing gear, and supper, Ron briefed us on the following two days fishing and split us into two different areas while he went looking for other places for us to fish.
The river was over a foot higher than when I fished it last, but extremely clear. We had two days of "bluebird weather", - the fish could see us better than we could see them, and we were fishing during the full moon week. All this made for really tough fishing. We all did catch the west cutthroat trout - on dry flies, but it was tough fishing even for Ron, who worked hard for us to all do the right things with our flies. The ones we caught and released were from 14" to 17", and in beautiful shape. We had numerous strikes, but few takes. (ed note –might want to work on those reflexes)
It was a very satisfying trip with good weather, good food, and good friends -and also some fish and lots of wildlife!!

Outings Calendar:
Leigh and I are back from vacation and now I need to sort out the next two outings scheduled for July.
We have an informal outing scheduled for July 10 to fish the Stilly. So far, the only members that have indicated that they will attend are Rich and Judy Dodd. If you want to go give it a try, please let me know and we'll try to coordinate a caravan or car pool, as it is just for the day. I would appreciate any input from our members on where to fish and what species we should try to target this time of year. Recommendations for fly patterns and tactics would be helpful whether you pan to go along or not.
The next event for July is a formal outing to Howard Miller Steelhead Park in Rockport Friday 7/30 - Sunday 8/1. I have reserved 4 RV sites with electric and water and so far, the only solid confirmation I have for a space is from the Dodds. I think Clarence and Mac may have mentioned it, but to tell the truth I cannot remember, so please contact me if you want one of the three remaining sites. I will have to cancel the spaces by 7/21 to avoid charges. If you plan to camp, please contact the Park directly for reservations at 360-853-8808 and please let me know you are coming so we can coordinate phone numbers and get-togethers.

If you have questions, comments or suggestions please give me a call or an email. We will discuss upcoming outings each month at the Club meeting. We’ll try to get you up to speed on where, how, flies etc etc in time for you to be ready to catch fish as
soon as we get there.

Education
As the club’s new Education Chair, I have a new approach. We are going to try a personal approach to our member's training needs. For example: we will now provide one on one training for any member that requests training in any area of fly fishing and the training is FREE for members (except fly tying which will be at a very small cost.)
Let's say for example you want to know how to do the following:
-casting
-fly tying--(some small training cost for this training--but well worth it and at a reduced cost for members!)
-rod building
-line building
-knots
-use of different boats-kayaks, pontoon, small fishing boats, belly boats, and practical experience too.
-entomology
-fishing salt water/fresh water--flies, techniques, local spots, types of fish, etc.
-proper fish handling/safety/conservation techniques
-where to fish and what flies/rod types to use at Pass, Lone, Cranberry, Campbell and other lakes, to include practical experience at the spot of your choosing.
-where to fish and what flies/rod types to use to fish at salt water spots on Whidbey, to include practical experience at the spot of your choosing.
-How/where/what flies/what rods/what fish to target our local rivers, with practical experience on the rivers.
-----and any other subject areas you might need----
So how do you sign up for this individualized training-----just call/email me and I will set it up. Rich Dodd, 360 929 5450 or rpdodd@comcast.net.
That's all you have to do--we have the qualified people and they are happy to share their knowledge with you--just let me know what you want. This is an opportunity for basically free fly fishing training that others have to pay for--don't let this pass you by!
Note: We still have lots of lines available to make shooting lines tailored specifically to your rod. Most lines are $20.00. We just got new lines in to make 7 wt floaters. Those lines will be $25 each. All of these lines cast better than the Rio shooting lines for approximately $50 less. (This is a REAL DEAL.)
